I recently wrote a post titled, “Docker Container Management at Scale” to help SaltStack users automate the deployment and management of Docker application containers at scale on any infrastructure or cloud. The article provides a step-by-step guide to implementing a simple SaltStack and Docker environment used to run a PHP application with HAProxy and Apache.
With this setup, information about each Docker container IP address and exposed port can be easily obtained and used for production-ready, more- realistic orchestration. A video demo of this example, with hundreds of containers under management, is available via the Salt Air 20 tutorial on our Youtube channel:
“SaltStack senior engineer, Dave Boucha, demonstrates how to use SaltStack systems management software to automate the orchestration of a large-scale Docker container environment. Dave uses HAProxy running on VMs in Rackspace for this demo, but SaltStack can be used to deploy and manage containers running in any cloud environment.” – Salt Air 20
The new Salt 2014.7 release includes the latest SaltStack support for Docker, and stay tuned for more SaltStack support for application container technologies like LXC.
To learn more, consider attending these events this week. SaltStack is sponsoring DockerCon Europe 2014 in Amsterdam. Track down Love Nyberg of Bloglovin at DockerCon to learn more about how they are using SaltStack to do rolling Docker deployments. Also, the next SaltStack London user group meeting will be held on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014 at 6:30pm. At the meetup, the good folks from SOON_ will demonstrate how they use SaltStack and Docker in production to run www.do-it.org.uk. Make sure to register for the SaltStack London user group to get access to more details.
